About Fushimi Inari Taisha
Kyoto's most iconic spiritual site, dedicated to Inari, the Shinto kami of rice, sake, agriculture, and business prosperity. Thousands of vibrant red-orange gates line a 4 km mountain pilgrimage trail.
Founded in 711 AD, Fushimi Inari-taisha is the head shrine for over 30,000 Inari shrines throughout Japan. Each of the thousands of torii gates lining the paths was donated by a Japanese business or individual seeking success and gratitude, with donor names inscribed on the posts. As you hike up the sacred mountain, stone fox (kitsune) statues holding keys to rice granaries guard sacred altars. The lower paths (Senbon Torii) feature densely packed gates, while higher segments offer serene forest solitude and sunset panoramas over Kyoto.

Main shrine amulet offices open 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. The mountain trail remains accessible all night with atmospheric lantern lighting.
