🧭 First Trip Abroad — The Complete Beginner's Handbook
Passports, bookings, money, phones, packing and airport day — every step of international travel explained for first-timers.
Start with documents: your passport needs 6 months validity beyond your travel dates and 2+ blank pages. Check visa requirements the day you start planning — some are on-arrival stamps, others take weeks of embassy processing. Photograph every document and email copies to yourself.
Book the skeleton, improvise the rest: lock flights and the first 2-3 nights' accommodation, then leave room to adjust. Over-planned itineraries crumble on contact with reality; under-planned arrivals at midnight are miserable. The first night booked is non-negotiable.
Money setup: notify your bank of travel, carry a no-foreign-fee card plus a backup on a different network, and land with $50-100 in local currency or withdraw at an airport ATM (decline the ATM's "convert to home currency" offer — always be charged in local currency).
Phone connectivity: eSIMs (Airalo, Holafly) activate before you land and cost a few dollars. A working phone with offline Google Maps downloaded transforms arrival day from stressful to trivial.
On airport day: arrive 3 hours before international flights, keep documents in one accessible pouch, and put a change of clothes plus all valuables in your carry-on. Checked bags go missing rarely — but never carry anything in them you can't afford to lose.
