Everything you need to start working remotely while traveling the world — visas, gear, income, insurance and picking your first base.

Becoming a digital nomad starts long before you book a flight. The first step is securing location-independent income — whether that's remote employment, freelancing, or running your own online business. Aim for at least 3-6 months of expenses saved before you leave, so a slow month never becomes an emergency.

Choosing your first base matters more than most people think. Cities like Chiang Mai, Lisbon, Medellín and Bali's Canggu have large nomad communities, reliable internet, affordable living costs and co-working spaces on every corner. Starting somewhere with an established community means instant friends, proven apartments and fewer logistical surprises.

Visas are the part most beginners overlook. Over 50 countries now offer dedicated digital nomad visas — Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Costa Rica and Estonia among the most popular. These typically require proof of remote income ($2,000-3,500/month) and grant 6-24 month stays, far better than visa-running on tourist entries.

Your gear should be minimal but reliable: a lightweight laptop, universal power adapter, noise-cancelling headphones, a portable hotspot or local SIM strategy, and a backup drive. Everything you own should fit in one carry-on and one backpack — mobility is the entire point.

Finally, don't skip insurance. Standard travel insurance rarely covers long stays or laptops. Nomad-specific providers like SafetyWing and Genki cover health care across countries on a monthly subscription, and some now include electronics coverage.
