Visitor Overview & History

About Eiffel Tower

Gustave Eiffel's masterpiece was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle and has become the world's most-visited paid monument. Three public observation levels offer panoramic vistas across Paris.

Constructed between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch to the World's Fair, the Eiffel Tower was initially criticized by Paris's leading artists and intellectuals for its bold wrought-iron lattice design. Today, standing at 330 metres, it stands as the defining landmark of France. Visitors can explore the glass-floored 1st floor, the dining terraces and gift shops on the 2nd floor, and ascend by glass elevators to the dizzying Summit platform. At night, 20,000 bulbs sparkle for five minutes every hour on the hour, illuminating the Parisian skyline in breathtaking golden light.
