Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre)

Inaugurated in 80 AD under Emperor Titus, this 50,000-seat amphitheatre hosted gladiatorial contests, battle reenactments, and classical dramas for over four centuries.

Constructed of travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, the Colosseum remains an awe-inspiring feat of Roman engineering. Its ingenious system of arches, barrel vaults, and 80 numbered entrance gates (vomitoria) could empty 50,000 spectators in just ten minutes. Beneath the arena floor lay the Hypogeum — a complex two-level subterranean network of tunnels, cages, and mechanical counterweight elevators that hoisted gladiators and wild animals directly onto the sand. A combined ticket includes access to the adjacent Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
